Creating a unique and inviting restaurant experience that cleverly blurred the lines between an art gallery and exquisite dining was high on the agenda. Ensuring the space was highly functional but also minimalistic to enhance the art gallery feel was an important design concept. The vital building services and fittings required for a busy restaurant needed to be completely invisible to diners to keep the clean flow of the area.
The client wanted to preserve the stunning heritage elements of the existing building. The 60-year-old green terrazzo flooring was carefully rejuvenated and gives a wonderful focal point to the space. With the dining being split into three different zones it was important to ensure the areas flowed well with each other regardless of the different components they offered. The restaurant consists of the front Bar Sport, the Ladies’ Lounge, and the Caravaggio room – named after the 16th-century Italian painter. The courtyard (II Corile) consists of tables that cleverly hug the narrow laneway between the restaurant and the neighbouring store.
The concentrated use of concrete in the overall design gives that stark and impressive essence that enhances the overall feel of the arty components important in the design spec. Black concrete Alter and bars were needed to be poured on-site. Areas around the space that had no terrazzo flooring were enhanced with the use of contrasting black concrete. The white concrete in the courtyard and around the water fountain – a 17th-century Italian stone masterpiece – add the all-important divergence of tones.
Keeping with the essential heritage aspects in this custom design, all interior walls were also rendered using traditional techniques. Mood lighting sets off the artwork that decorates the space while creating interesting shadows and focal points around the different zones. Contrasting furniture with neutral accents the details around the room while grounding the space and adding an element of warmth.
A truly interesting restaurant, with custom focal points and artistic flair perfectly suited to the overall design concept of the brief. Delivering a spectacular space, that tantalises not only the eyes, but also the tastebuds.
